How to cite:

In MLA, you must “cite” sources that you have paraphrased, quoted or otherwise used to write your research paper. Cite your sources in two places:

  1. In the body of your paper where you add a brief in-text citation.

MLA (Modern Language Association) Style is widely used in the humanities, especially in writing on language and literature. MLA style uses brief parenthetical citations in the text that refer to an alphabetical list of works cited appearing at the end of the work.
MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (8th ed., 2016)
Various UW Libraries locations. LB 2369 .G53 2016.
Intended for use by undergraduate writers.

The works cited should include as many core elements as are relevant to the source as possible. The list below, taken directly from the MLA style handbook, lists the elements for each source in the order they should appear in a citation. MLA 8th edition only uses periods and commas to indicate the end of an element, as noted in the list below.

MLA Paper Format:
MLA format is typically used in English, language and literature, and Foreign Language classes.

The MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual are both available in the library:
The Modern Language Association of America publishes two academic style guides. The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers is used mainly by high school and undergraduate students in the humanities. The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing is intended for graduate students, scholars, and professional writers. Both guides offer extensive guidance on writing papers, including how to cite sources.

Here are some important characteristics of MLA to keep in mind as you get started:
MLA is the official citation style for the Modern Language Association. MLA is designed for the humanities, but can be used for any subject area. MLA citation style formatting has changed over the years and is currently in its eighth edition.
